This is a popular annual event for all children and families that celebrates, nurtures and encourages the message that all children should be treasured. Join the Teddy Bears' Picnic on The Breeze Picnic Lawn, with entertainment for preschool and primary aged children.

Bouncy entertainment, performing arts, boat rides, face painting and sports.

Children’s Day is usually the first Sunday in March (Sunday 4 March 2012). It is a special day to spend time as a family and perhaps try things you haven’t done before. This year the key theme will be ‘love and affection’.

For something special this Children’s Day, visit one of our great libraries which are open on Sunday:

The vibrant, up to date and family friendly suburban libraries open from 10am to 4pm and the two Central city libraries 10am to 5pm. Come away with an armful of great books, DVDs, CDs and much more for the whole family to enjoy.

Christchurch City Libraries — a great place for children and their parents

Joining the library

  • Find out about joining the library and getting a card for your child — it’s free and gives them a passport to a world of fun and information.
  • You can start from Day One ... libraries are for babies too.
Each year about 5,000 Books for Babies packs are distributed to parents and babies through hospitals, midwives and the Homebirth Association. In 2011 Books for Babies celebrated its 20th year.

We have a great range of sessions at our libraries with songs, games and stories especially tailored for everyone from babies to those just about to start school. When a child turns four they can come into any Christchurch City Library and pick up a Ready for Reading pack. The pack contains a purpose written book ‘Right on Time’, a jigsaw, a birthday card, and a pamphlet with tips on how parents can help their child get ready for reading.
  • Children’s collections include books for older and younger readers, reference books, picture books, jigsaws and more.
  • Our children’s DVD collection has over 1500 items, all are described in our catalogue as to whether they are based on older or younger fiction, picture books or are non fiction.
