Waikerikikari (Hickory Bay)

The area known as Waikerikikari — the Bay of Angry Waters — was never permanently settled by Māori.

The bay faces due east, with two great bluffs making access to the bay a hazardous venture. The only reliable access was by land.

Hickory Bay was the last bay to be settled by Europeans. Amongst these settlers was the eccentric Harry Head. He was widely read and established a garden before finally selling his holding and taking off on yet another adventure. He would eventually travel round the world seven times, keeping an account of his adventures.
