A partnership approach to training students by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the School of Biological Sciences, UC, lead to the formation of the Centre of Excellence in Aquaculture and Marine Ecology (CEAME).

Provides registry services to the New Zealand commercial fishing industry for the Quota Management System. These services are provided under the Fisheries Act 1996.

Main purpose is to ensure that fisheries are sustainably used within a healthy aquatic ecosystem.

National Aquatic Biodiversity Information System (NABIS) is a website application using GIS (geographic information system) tools to provide spatial definition and visual representation of New Zealand's marine biological and fisheries management data.

* No Take Marine Reserves Waiho nga Kai a Tangaroa
About ‘no-take’ marine reserves – areas of the sea in which there is no fishing at all; as little other human disturbance as can be reasonably arranged, but where people are encouraged to learn about the more natural marine life and processes that this produces. The focus is upon the New Zealand experience within such reserves, the practical lessons this has taught us, and the scientific principles that have emerged.

A cross-government exercise, covering all aspects of oceans management, to ensure integrated and consistent management of the oceans within New Zealand's jurisdiction. This web site contains information about development of the Oceans Policy up until July 2003.
* Te Ohu Kai Moana Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission
Set up in 1992 to replace the Māori Fisheries Commission, established in 1989 to hold fisheries assets returned to Māori by the Crown, and to arrange for their eventual distribution.
