The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document. Like all treaties, it is an exchange of promises. This website sets out to give a concise account of the Treaty of Waitangi itself and the issues surrounding it, which generally are not well understood. The Treaty of Waitangi section includes material originally found on www.treatyofwaitangi.govt.nz, a site developed by the Treaty Information Unit in the State Services Commission. Material from that site is now combined with other topics on www.nzhistory.net.nz to provide a range of features about the Treaty of Waitangi and Waitangi Day.

1835 Declaration of Independence He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni

This is an international declaration signed on 28 October 1835 which recognises the sovereignty of the Independent Tribes of New Zealand. Waitangi Tribunal Te Ropu Whakamana i te Tiriti o Waitangi

Established by the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. It is a permanent commission of inquiry and consists of 16 members appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister of Māori Affairs. The Tribunal's role is to make recommendations on claims brought by Māori relating to the practical application of the Treaty and to determine whether certain matters are inconsistent with the principles of the Treaty.
