Crown Agents
A type of crown entity created by the 2004 Crown Entities Act. Crown entities are a diverse range of statutory bodies, which have significant roles in the governments public service. They are public sector organisations, such as commissions, authorities or boards, which are not public service departments or State-owned enterprises. Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)- Administers New Zealand's accident compensation scheme, which provides personal injury cover for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand.

Civil Aviation Authority Te Mana Rererangi Tumatanui o Aotearoa- The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is the regulatory authority for civil aviation in New Zealand. Establishes and maintains the rules that all pilots, engineers, aircraft operators, airlines and aerodromes follow to keep flying safe. Checks these rules are being complied with and has the power to take action if found that they are not.
District Health Boards
Earthquake Commission- Responsible for providing insurance of residential property against loss or damage caused by earthquake, volcanic eruption, hydrothermal activity, tsunamis and natural landslips; administering the Natural Disaster Fund; and facilitating research and education about natural disaster damage and its mitigation.
Electricity Commission Te Komihana Hiko- Set up under the Electricity Act to oversee New Zealand's electricity industry and markets. Regulates the operation of the electricity industry and markets, to ensure electricity is produced and delivered to all consumers in an efficient, fair, reliable and environmentally sustainable manner. Promotes and facilitates the efficient use of electricity. Also known as Electricity Governance Board
Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (EECA)- Works to bring about voluntary changes of behaviour to implement Government strategies for energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy in both the private and public sectors.
Foundation for Research Science & Technology Tuapapa Rangahau Putaiao- Responsible for investment of public funds in research, science, technology and engineering. It is also responsible for providing independent policy advice on science and technology to Government, and encouraging technological innovation through the Technology New Zealand scheme.
Health Research Council of New Zealand Te Kaunihera Rangahau Hauora o Aotearoa- Responsible for the management of the Government's investment in public good health research.
Health Sponsorship Council Te Roopu Whakatairanga Hauora- The Health Sponsorship Council is a social change agent, marketing health messages to New Zealanders. Includes Smokefree/Auahi Kore, Quit/Me Mutu, SunSmart, Bike Wise (cycle safety).
Housing New Zealand Corporation- Assists Government to meet a number of social objectives through housing policy. These objectives relate to the provision of housing and housing services for people who wish to improve their housing circumstances.
Land Transport New Zealand Ikiiki Whenua Aotearoa- A new government agency formed on 1 December 2004 from the merger of Transfund New Zealand and the Land Transport Safety Authority by the Land Transport Management Amendment Act. Land Transport New Zealand's objective is to contribute to an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable land transport system.
Legal Services Agency Pokapu Ratonga Ture- Promotes access to justice for all New Zealanders. Set up by the Legal Services Act 2000. This Act's purpose is "to promote access to justice by: providing a legal aid scheme, to help people who cannot afford legal services to have access to them; providing other means of legal assistance; supporting community legal services by funding community law centres, education and research".
Maritime New Zealand Kia Mānu Kia Ora- Undertakes activities that promote a safe maritime environment and provides an effective marine pollution prevention and an effective marine oil pollution response system. Formerly the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand.
New Zealand Blood Service- Ensures the supply of safe blood and blood products, and has the responsibility for the development of an integrated national blood transfusion service for New Zealand. NZBS is responsible for all aspects of the transfusion process from the collection of blood from volunteer donors to the transfusion of blood products within the hospital environment.
New Zealand Fire Service Commission- Controls the New Zealand Fire Service and the National Rural Fire Authority. Through them it provides fire-fighting services and assistance with other emergencies.
New Zealand Qualifications Authority Mana Tohu Matauranga o Aotearoa- Provides national and international leadership in assessment and qualifications. Quality assures secondary and tertiary qualifications and education providers, evaluates overseas qualifications and administers the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications and the National Qualifications Framework, including the NCEA.
New Zealand Tourism Board Manaakitanga Aotearoa- Develops, implements and promotes strategies for tourism; advises the Government and the New Zealand tourism industry on matters relating to the development, implementation, and promotion of those strategies.
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE)- The New Zealand government's national economic development agency. Aims to grow New Zealand's economy by boosting the capability of businesses and regions and facilitating participation in overseas markets. Formed from the merger of Trade New Zealand and Industry New Zealand.
Pharmaceutical Management Agency Limited (PHARMAC)- PHARMAC is responsible for managing a nationally consistent Pharmaceutical Schedule on behalf of the District Health Boards. PHARMAC's overall objective is to secure for eligible people in need of pharmaceuticals, the best health outcomes that are reasonably achievable from pharmaceutical treatment and from with in the amount of funding provided.
Residual Health Management Unit- Responsible for all Area Health Board assets and liabilities
Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) Ihi Aotearoa- Works with schools, community clubs, sports organisations, iwi, regional sports trusts and local authorities to create opportunities for all New Zealanders to be active and reach their potential in their chosen sports. Formed after a major review into sport, fitness and leisure. Incorporating the functions of the Hillary Commission, the New Zealand Sports Foundation and the sport policy arm of the Office of Tourism and Sport..
Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua- Responsible for funding all post-compulsory education and training. Responsible for the Tertiary Education Strategy. Includes the functions and responsibilities of the Transition Tertiary Education Commission, Skill New Zealand and Tertiary Resourcing from the Ministry of Education.
Transfund New Zealand Arataki Aotearoa
Transit New Zealand Ararau Aotearoa- Responsible for the management, development and maintenance of the state highways. Its overall aim is to operate a safe and efficient state highway network.
