Autonomous crown entities
A type of crown entity created by the 2004 Crown Entities Act. Crown entities are a diverse range of statutory bodies, which have significant roles in the governments public service. They are public sector organisations, such as commissions, authorities or boards, which are not public service departments or State-owned enterprises. Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand Te Kaunihera Whakatupato Waipiro O Aotearoa- Promotes moderation in the use of alcohol and develops and promotes strategies that will reduce alcohol related problems for the nation.
Charities Commission- Responsible for approving and registering charities; monitoring; to educate, provide advice to and support the trustees and officers of charities; and provide advice to government.
Creative New Zealand | Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa- The main arts development organisation in New Zealand. Encourages, promotes and supports the arts for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) Ngā Kaiwhakatūpato Whakararu Taiao- Controls the introduction to New Zealand of new hazardous substances and new plants and animals, including genetically modified organisms.
Families Commission Kōmihana ā whānau- Advocates for New Zealand families. Promotes better understanding of family issues and needs amongst government agencies and in the wider community, and encourages and informs public debate about families
Government Superannuation Fund Authority Te Pūtea Penihana Kāwanatanga- Responsible for managing the assets and liabilities of the Government Superannuation Fund (“GSF” or the “Fund”) and the GSF Schemes. Established in October 2001.
Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation- Manages and administers the New Zealand Superannuation Fund's assets in a prudent, commercial manner. Their objective is to maximise investment growth without undue risk to the Fund as a whole.
International Accreditation New Zealand- Part of New Zealand's national standards and conformance infrastructure. It is the national authority for the accreditation of laboratories, inspection bodies and other technical competence based activities
Mental Health Commission- Monitors and reports to Government on the performance of the Ministry of Health and District Health Board in the implementation of the Government's National Mental Health Strategy.
New Zealand Artificial Limb Board- The New Zealand Artificial Limb Board (NZALB) helps with the rehabilitation of amputees through the provision of prosthetic services.
New Zealand Film Commission Te Tuma Whakaata Taonga- Encourages the production and promotion of New Zealand movies being made by New Zealand directors.
New Zealand Historic Places Trust Pouhere Taonga- Keeps New Zealand's heritage places alive and useful. Recognition, protection and promotion of New Zealand's historic and cultural heritage.
New Zealand Lotteries Commission- Responsible for promoting and conducting New Zealand lotteries, to generate profits for the benefit of all New Zealand communities. Products include Lotto, Powerball, Keno, and Instant Kiwi.
New Zealand On Air Irirangi te Motu- NZ On Air is responsible for reflecting and developing New Zealand identity and culture by funding programming on radio and television about New Zealand and New Zealand interests, promoting New Zealand music, and encouraging archives that are likely to be of historical interest in New Zealand. Also known as the Broadcasting Commission.
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra- The country's national orchestra and one of the leading three symphony orchestras in Australasia. Involved in education programmes. The NZSO also administers the NZSO Chamber Orchestra and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra.
New Zealand Teachers Council Te Pouherenga Kaiako o Aotearoa- The professional body for all registered teachers. Promotes teaching as a profession and enhances the standing of teachers in our communities.
Office of the Retirement Commissioner- Provides independent, impartial, factual information on retirement income related issues and trends.
Public Trust- Trustee organisation set up in 1873 with a unique mandate to protect the future of New Zealanders. Offers independent, professional advice and a wide range of legal and financial services.
Standards Council- The governing body for Standards NZ. The Standards Council is New Zealand's national standards organisation. The trading arm is Standards New Zealand (SNZ). Standards New Zealand is entirely self-funded, generating revenue by providing a wide range of standards-related products and services to the Government and private sector.
Te Mangai Paho Maori Broadcasting Funding Authority- A Crown Entity established to make funding available to the national network of Māori radio stations and for the production of Māori language television programmes, music CDs and videos. Also known as TMP; Te Reo Whakapuaki Irirangi.
Te Papa Tongarewa - Museum of New Zealand Wellington- Preserves and presents the taonga (treasures) of New Zealand's peoples and interprets the country's heritage for national and international audiences.
