Hockey
Hockey has been a popular sport in Christchurch since the 1890s. This page lists hockey resources available at Christchurch City Libraries, as well as information on hockey venues and some well-known hockey players.
Where to play in Christchurch
Christchurch’s main hockey venues containing artificial fields are Porritt Park in Wainoni and Nunweek Park in Harewood. Other hockey fields are South Hagley Park (Hospital Corner), Burwood Park and Broomfield Common.
Local hockey clubs are listed in our community information directory, CINCH. In May 2010 a new artificial turf opened at St Bede’s College, and funding has been set aside in Christchurch City Council’s 2009-2019 Long Term Council Community Plan for further hockey surfaces.
International successes
New Zealand’s best international hockey performance was at the the 1976 Montreal Olympics where the team, including several Canterbury Olympians — Paul Ackerley, Thur (Arthur) Borren, Alan Chesney, John Christensen, Tony Ineson, Barry Maister and Selwyn Maister — won the men’s gold medal.
New Zealand also won the men’s silver medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the women’s bronze medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.
