Football clubs and organisations

Football is played across all ages and levels of competitiveness in our region. Mainland Football administer local leagues from headquarters at English Park. Community information directory CINCH has contacts for football clubs and organisations.

Global football festival

The annual Global Football Festival is a Christchurch celebration of the worldwide appeal of the beautiful game. Teams from different cultures living in Christchurch battle it out over three days of keen competition. The games are accompanied by passionate fans as well as ethnic food stalls.

Football on television

Pay-for Sky TV broadcasts most soccer in New Zealand, although highlights can regularly be seen on news and sports programmes on most free-to-air channels. The Australasian A-League (where New Zealand is represented by the Wellington-based Phoenix) the Premier League and UEFA competitions are the most common matches screened.

The first New Zealand interprovincial soccer game was played in Christchurch on August 16, 1890. Canterbury beat Wellington 2-0.
