Connect
Connect courses offer an introduction to digital literacy utilizing the wealth of community library resources. They aim to develop life-long learning habits for the digital age and connect with the community at a community library, through a series of technology tasters.
These free programmes are one-off sessions lasting 90 minutes. Further lessons on each theme can be developed in negotiation with Learning Centre staff, however these will be on a user-pay basis.
Connect courses will be offered on a continuous basis between Weeks 2-10 of each term. The maximum number of students per course is 30. Bookings will be taken on a first come first served basis.

Connect Programmes Topics 2011
What Is A Library?
Take a fresh look at what a modern library has to offer. Tour the space and find out about library layout, self-issue and other special features. Learn how to find the items you really want to take out and how to request the ones that aren’t on the shelves. And what is Overdrive?
Library Literacy — Making The Most Of Your Community Library
Focus on particular areas of interest on the CCL website — Kids, Heritage, Māori — you choose. Explore the kids blog and learn how to comment on the posts and join as a contributor. Read books online and find out how the library can help you answer your homework questions using a live online librarian.
Cyber Citizenship — Me And My Class
A technology taster using Inspiration to assist your students in brainstorming what it takes to be a good class and/or school citizen. Learn safe and appropriate ways of being an online citizen. Explore the concept of citizenship at home, at school, and in the physical and digital community. Discuss ways of avoiding common problems and have fun with this new learning frontier. Develop these ideas further by booking a class visit and make deeper connections by looking at citizenship within the wider community.
For The Love Of Reading
Take whatever focus suits your classroom programme: How do you find a good book? Learn how to use the library catalogue to discover what’s on offer across the library network. Learn about safe social reading sites like Shelfari. What is a blog? And how can you connect with other kids and share your reading opinions via a blog?
Music To My Ears
These days it is rare to hear the words “Shhhh this is a Library!” Today’s libraries are vibrant places with listening posts, CDs, tapes and many books on music. You can also discover music online and experiment with making your own music using Super Dooper Music Looper software in the Learning Centre.
Information Literacy — Beyond Google
Finding information is easy when you have the right information literacy skills. There is just too much information at our fingertips these days. We need quality, not quantity. Learn how to find what you are really looking for using Google tools, library databases and search engines. This is a great session if you have a specific topic for the class to work on.
