The original Waiau Ferry Hotel, North Canterbury
The original Waiau Ferry Hotel, North Canterbury
[ca. 1880]
This was little more than a two-roomed clay whare built by Arthur Munson (1841-1920) about 1875. It was on the Waiau River at what is now Lochiel on the road to Hanmer Springs. Munson was also the ferryman. A descendant believes he is the man shown in the doorway. Munson's nephew Samuel Munson Neville took over the running of the hotel at a later time.
