New Zealand Tourism: History

Library resources

New Zealand Yearbook, Statistics New Zealand
Held on microfiche (1893 - 1990) and in print in ANZC, this gives an annual summary of tourism statistics and trends.
Principles of Tourism: A New Zealand Perspective, Alan Collier, 5th ed, 1999.
This has an excellent chapter on the history and growth of tourism.
Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives, by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts (later known as the Tourist and Publicity Department; now called Tourism New Zealand).
The most comprehensive tourism history resources held by the Aotearoa New Zealand Centre are the yearly reports published in these volumes. From 1902 to 1972 they are published under the shoulder number H-2. From 1973 to the present they can be found under the G-25 shoulder number. These are an invaluable primary resource on the development of the New Zealand tourism industry. They include international visitor and regional tourism statistics, information on marketing and promotion initiatives, detail on the development of resorts throughout the country, visitor activities, tourism funding and other issues. The reports sometimes include historical photographs of tourism resorts and activities. Because of their fragility the AJHR up until 1960 are housed in the Research Room and may not be photocopied.
