Fendalton Library FAQ
- Why is the library closing?
- The library is closing to allow earthquake repairs to be carried out. A contractor is available to start work on Monday 28 November so closing the library now will ensure we are able to get repairs underway immediately. The library would have been closed for the Christmas/New Year public holidays anyway so closing it now will ensure we are able to minimise disruption to customers and re-open in the New Year.
- Why have you only found out now that the building needs repairs?
- The need for repairs was identified after the building underwent a detailed engineering evaluation. The building received a level two assessment — a visual inspection of the outside and inside of the building — after the February earthquake and received a green placard. The building has now undergone a much more detailed assessment. This is part of an ongoing process being carried out by the Council to proactively ensure all its facilities undergo detailed engineering reviews after the recent earthquakes and aftershocks.
- When will it re-open?
- We are expecting the library to re-open at the end of February. We will keep you informed about developments.
- What other libraries can I visit in the meantime?
- The nearby Papanui and Redwood libraries remain open. Papanui Library now opens seven days a week due to increased demand for library services on the northwest of the city.
A new Central City library will also open in Peterborough Street on Monday 19 December.
