Montana Poetry Day 2008

Visit Christchurch City Libraries and join the nationwide celebration of poetry.

July 18 is Montana Poetry Day 2008. Join the nationwide opportunity to read, listen to and create poetry. Visit the Central Library all week and add your favourite poem to the Poet Tree in the foyer, listen to the Airing Cupboard Women’s Poetry Group at South Library or take a trip to New Brighton Library to see their week long poetry display.

New Brighton Library are hosting a live poetry reading event over the weekend of 19th - 20th July between 2pm - 3pm. Poets are welcome to turn up on the day and read one of their poems (or preferably book a time slot on either of the days).

Poems for Lunch: Friday 18 July

Lunchtime readings at the University Bookshop on the Canterbury University campus. Jeffrey Paparoa Holman, Dora Sharpe-Davidson, Rebekah Eder, Rachel King, Ross Brighton, Marissa Johnpillai, Doc Drumheller and others perform poetry for every taste. Tea and coffee will be provided so bring your sandwiches and join them.

Poetry Wall: All week leading up to Poetry Day

Help UBS build up their Poetry Wall. In the week leading up to Montana Poetry Day come into the shop and add a poem of your choice. It can be anything – from Winnie-the-Pooh to a Shakespearean sonnet or James K Baxter - or one you knocked up in your lunch-time. We want the wall completely filled.

Akaroa Community Arts Council Day of Poetry: Friday 18 July

11am  Morning Coffee at the Coronation Library
Readings from local poets including Fiona Farrell, Patsy Turner and Jeanette Jacobson as well as Pam Ayres’ DVD performance of ‘The Akaroa Cannon’.
2.30pm Sizzling Sonnets by the Canon on the Waterfront
Children and their parents are invited to a free sausage sizzle which will feature readings of children’s favourite poems and poems by the children themselves.
7pm Wine and Whimsy at the Coronation Library
Join Lynda Driver, Patsy Turner and Jeanette Jacobson for an evening of readings. Music from Denis Britenden and protégés.
