Our Events

Children’s Collections

PhotoEverything in the library is arranged to make finding what you want as easy as possible, but if you need help ask a librarian. That’s what we’re here for.

All children’s items are free to borrow.

Children's Fiction
This is divided into picture books, younger fiction and older fiction.
Older Fiction
Aimed at children 10-12 and comprises the best of titles published in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, United States and Canada.
Picture Books
This collection is designed to introduce children to a wide range of experiences, settings, themes, feelings, situations, characters, art and language. Included in this collection are board books with cardboard pages designed for children in their 1st to 2nd year.
Younger Fiction
This collection introduces children aged roughly 6-9 and "newly independent as readers to longer chapter books with a variety of themes, settings and characterization.
DVDs
Children’s DVD titles are available at all of our libraries. They are issued free, for one week.
He Pukapuka Māori
As part of our commitment to, and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Children’s and Young Adult Services strive to collect as much quality material, written for children, as possible, written in Māori and about things Māori written in English and Māori.
Jigsaws
Jigsaws are available for exchange at the following libraries: Akaroa, Fendalton, Little River, Linwood, New Brighton, Redwood, and Shirley. Hornby Library jigsaws are held at the Community Care shop in the same building. The Community Care shop is open Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 3:30pm.
Large Print
Children’s large print titles are available with a special collection at Fendalton Library.
Reference books
This collection provides up-to-date information on a wide variety of subjects with particular emphasis on New Zealand and Children’s Literature. Materials include encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries and yearbooks.
Stories to Go Bags
Each bag contains books, puzzle books, a DVD, a talking book and activity sheets. Bags are available at all libraries apart from Diamond Harbour, Little River and Mobile.
